| | Before you use WebCat or WebCT, there
are a few steps you must take to prepare your computer. If you
skip these steps, your web browser will not work with WebCat or WebCT.
First of all, please run the Browser
Checker to ensure that your web browser is compatible with
and configured correctly for WebCat. The browser checker will
detect most issues that could cause WebCat to behave improperly,
but not all. The Browser checker can be found in the top right corner of the WebCat login page:
For maxiumum effectiveness please follow the checklist below to ensure the programs work properly for you. Refer back to this checklist if you have trouble using WebCat. |

You will need to have the Sun Microsystems Java Runtime Environment (JRE) software installed on your computer in order for certain areas of WebCat to function properly. The software can be downloaded from http://www.java.com. Click the "Free Java Download" button and follow the instructions in order to install the software.
If you are a PC user, it is important to note that having multiple versions of Java installed on your system may cause problems with WebCat. You should remove all other versions of Java from your computer via the control panel before installing this.

You will be unable to use WebCat unless you disable pop-up blocking on your web browser. Pop-up blockers work in the background to stop those annoying pop-up advertising windows that many web sites open, but they can also prevent many of the functions of WebCat from working properly. You may not even be aware that pop-up blocking software is active, but you need to check this before attempting to log in to WebCat. Internet Explorer, for example, has a built-in pop-up blocker that should be either turned off or configured to allow popups from the WebCat server.
To disable Internet Explorer’s pop-up blocker, click on the Tools menu and select Pop-up Blocker. If it says “Turn Off Pop-up Blocker” click the option to turn it off. If it says, Turn ON Pop-up Blocker, leave the setting as it is. It is already off.

Many other auxillary programs also have a pop-up blocker function, especially "toolbar" programs such as Google Toolbar and Yahoo! Toolbar. Depending on the pop-up blocking software you are using, you may be able to set WebCat as an allowed site, or you can just disable all pop-up blockers while using WebCat.

By default, Internet Explorer’s privacy features notify you when an unknown website is trying to download files to your computer.
This notification interferes with WebCat functionality.
In order to download files, you need to add both the WCU and Blackboard internet domains to the list of "trusted" web sites within Microsoft’s IE web browser.
- Open Internet Explorer
- Click the tools button or menu and then click Internet Options.
- Click the Security tab, and then click Trusted Sites.
- Click the Sites button.

With the "Trusted Sites" window open, do the following:
- Uncheck the box next to Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone.
- Type the following into the Add this Web site to the zone box: *.blackboard.com
- Click the Add button.
- Type the following into the Add this Web site to the zone box: *.wcu.edu
- Click the Add button.

- Click the Close button at the bottom of the dialog box. This will take you back to Internet Options
- Click the Default level button.
- Drag the Security level slider for this zone to Low.

This setting only applies to the sites listed in the Trusted Sites list. This setting will not lower the privacy or security settings used when visiting other sites.
